Let the bawling commence! Smooth weaning yesterday and finished in record time. Only one calf busted outta prison last night and I was able to catch her at the barn this morning. I'll just wean her there; she can hang with the cull cows, and I'm not interested in giving her the opportunity for Round 2. Plus, she won't be as easy to catch next time. I don't do true fence line weaning, but they're kitty corner across the road in another pasture. Calves congregate at the corner off & on for a couple days and the mamas almost take shifts, with a few at the opposite corner at various times during the day.
Not a uniform calf crop this year. First one was 3 weeks early, born 2/20 with the last born 5/13. Overall, the majority were born between the last couple days of Feb - 3rd week of April. Even with the severe drought, I plan on weaning them a minimum of 45 days, maybe longer if we get some rain. Here's hoping for no sickness and the market continues to be strong!
