Curious if bale density affects how well a round bale keeps. I wondered if a bale was a little high on moisture if it would keep any different in a tighter or looser bale? I know a tight bale seems to keep better stored outside but would it make nay difference under a tarp or in a barn?

I seem to be able to get away with baling a lot higher moisture in the tighter bales than in the old Vermeer 605C.

My old Hesston 5500 made 5'x5' bales weighing around 800 lbs. Seemed to me the 5500 was more forgiving about the hay being greener/higher moisture content than my 856A baler because the bales weren't as dense and could "breathe" some.
The 856A bales weigh about 1300 lbs when I make them the same 5x5 size. I have baled hay not cured enough and the bales get moldy on the inside :oops:
To answer the original question, as long as the hay is put up correctly, I agree the dense bales keep much, much better and hold their shape better stored outside than softer bales do, especially when stacked :idea:
No experience with storing hay under cover, but seems bale density wouldn't make a lot of difference in those circumstances :2cents:
Yes. It doesn't matter sting or wrap the should be tight.
