I had to rope a calf yesterday from my horse.

And even though I could throw the rope, remembered how, which kind of surprised me.

I wasn't sure I got it dallied right on the horn.

My husband said I had it wrong, but he's a truck farmer.....;)

Tips please

Keep your thumb pointed straight to the sky! I used to dally (right or wrong) clockwise with 2 wraps so I could pay our the rope as needed. But that was almost 50 years ago
 
Sorry, can't help much.

I had to rope a heifer with pink eye a couple of years ago. Roped her out of the back of a truck in the middle of the night. I did not loop her on the first throw either so she began to shy pretty seriously. A truck bounces a whole lot more than I expected in the field I was in. I was rather embarrassed and thankfully it was night time so no one could have video taped it. Anyway, she got doctored without moving the whole darn herd to the working pens. If I had to do it over, I would have done it the same way.

I hate to admit it but the old fart got it right. Assuming of course that you are right handed. Always dally so that your little finger don't end up IN the dally if you always move away from your body you will always be right and definitely keep your thumb up.

you want to here my funny roping story?

My Vet called one day and he had a big buck deer that got stuck in his nieghbors goat netting.

The buck was pretty mad because of getting zapped all the time.

I met them out there and we had a time of it. It was in a muddy steep ravine, at night.

The buck had enough slack that he could take a pass at us. He didn't have a big set of antlers. But what he had, coming at you, looked sharp.
My vet roped the head, he had done alot of rodeo.

Then my vet struggled to snub him to a tree and I roped the heels.

This was at night, by flashlight. I was very proud of myself.

I know...I know...it might of been easier to have eaten him. But the goat man and my Vet wanted to get him loose.
