Root Canal

Help Support CattleToday:

Speaking as the son of a former Dentist who could have retired very wealthy if he chose to overtreat prople, I will tell you absolutely, question anything and everything your dentist proposes if it feels wrong to you.

I have a friend who went to another dentist ONCE, and was set up for a program that would have cost close to $7,000 if followed. He ended up having my dad do the work for around $ 1500 dollars and had ALL of his problems fixed and fixed well.

Remember Root canal and crown is now the treatment for the same things addressed by a single surface filling 30 years ago. Most of them just want to do cosmetic dentistry and send you to a specialist for everything else.

If you have an old school dentist who's major effort is to provide you with reasonable and well thought out care, you are very lucky in these times.

I have a great dentist, when the issue of the back tooth came up, he suggested I get the filling taken out and replaced with a filling treated with pain medicine, but I have had that pain beofre and wanted it gone, so i opted for the root canal option, yet if I would have gone the other route, I would have spent extra money, then still would have had the root canal expense, plus gone thru even more pain and agony.

I know some people who just get teeth pulled, rather than spend the big bucks getting crowns/root canals done, only problem with that is once the tooth is gone its gone forever, and thats not always good either. I always say the dentists charge more than doctors do, at least when you have medical insurance the insurance companies put limits on the charges allowed, when the dentist charges you, the insurance company pays to a limit, but then you still have to pay the rest. I have noticed that my dentist charges more than the allowed charges which does cause people to pay more than they should. There have been a few instances where I wondered if they weren't lining their pockets some, but he does good work, and I never have pain, so that counts for alot too.

My dentist shakes my hand every time I go there, and is very professional, and very nice, I like that about him.

Last one I got was about $900....everythign including the crown. Wanted a gold one with a small diamond in it and already had the little diamond but he recommended the regular stuff.
:lol2: Yeah, I wanted the gold crown myself. Hygenist said I was the wrong color for gold. So, I went along with the hygenist's recommendation.

According to my dentist, it's either gold or silver. He says they've found that crowns made from precious metals last longer than any other. He uses the gold. He doesn't recommend getting one with a porcelain cover; says that's just another thing to go wrong in the mouth.

Just stay with the little plastic "temporary" they put in there. Might be a bit off color but what the heck. The price is right. If it pops off just super glue it back.

Problem with gold and silver is that some insurance companies do not cover them, crowns are usually porcelain, i do have one gold crown in the back, they said it would work better because it was a biting tooth. Fillings for my insurance company they pay more for the white fillings, and less for silver- go figure?

I don't have an insurance company. It's all out of my pocket. But I always knew that savings account would come in handy sometime. :)
