I have a four year old hereford cow with a roach back. I've wondered about it , but didn't think too much about it until I saw the term roach back on this message board. Now it bothers me every time I look at her. Should I get rid of her? Can anyone tell me about problems or potential problems with roach back cows? :help: :help:

I had a 1000 lb cow that was roach backed. Ugly as sin but never weaned a calf under 600. Just cut the bulls and sell the heifers as long as she's making you money.

We don't have one, but I know several people that have them and they throw nice calves. I wouldn't worry about it.

Probably the best answer C13.

If the animal does the job and stays healthy - there is no problem.

If you have a herd that sits in the front field by a road and you are concerned about "appearances" then you can toss her.

I would be willing to bet there are a pile of folks on this board that have at least one "ugly" in the herd but are not willing to toss her until she no longer does the job.

I'll second that motion.

What does that mean? Roach back?

Instead of a smooth straight line from withers to tail, they look sort of hunched, like looking at a small hill rather than a flat road.

Is the roach back characteristic indicative of line breeding gone bad?

Nope. It's just where the backbone has an arch in it.
