saw some angus herd bulls going for 25000$

can someone explain to me what makes one to the next worth so much more. some from the same parents went for only 3000$

ive got limo /braford cattle and if i could get 3000$ for one of my bulls i have a heart attack.. and mine look just as good to those of us who watched it locally

I wish I could figure it out. I went to a sale a few years ago and a bull sold for $106,000.00. They turned him back out with several other bulls after he went through the ring and people started flocking around to see this expensive bull. I don;t think 1 person in 10 picked him out of the group as the high dollar bull until they saw his tag number. Then the most common comment was, "I like xx better then him"

dun

Where did you see this bull sell? Bull sales are about opinions.

Any bull is worth what someone is willing to pay for him. If he's a potential AI bull, the owner can make that back in semen and certificate sales.

It could also be payback, where one breeder goes to another's sale and pays high dollar for an animal because that guy came to his sale and paid high dollar for an animal.

That's one reason we don't use bulls based on their sale price. We generally wait until they've been widely used in the industry. For example, the bull N Bar Emulation EXT was sold as a yearling, sight unseen to a commercial rancher. It wasn't until he was a mature bull that he got noticed and picked up by ABS. Lots of those high dollar, widely hyped young bulls will not work out when they get into the hands of the general breeder. But some of them will.

was on rfdtv on sun maybe. not sure of the day. was from sterling? ranch in texas. maybe near you somewhere? it was a live auction. sold hundreds of cattle. mostly bulls and none of em sold for less than 3-4000 dollars.

crazy.

must know somethin i dont

I think it was the Stevenson Basin angus sale- and I heard that one bull sold for over $100,000... There is another thread on the cattle sales board about it......

I believe it was last year they had one sell for somewhere around $240,000....

that sounds right.

how they do that???

ive got great limo bullcalfs all yr long and cant get much over 400$ for a weaned bull bout 450 lbs.

im clueless i guess. not marketing?

Stevenson-Basin has been around for a long time. They have a track record with their customers.

They're not selling weaned bulls. They're selling tested bulls from genetics that work in their customer's programs. Feeding out that number of bulls and putting on a sale costs a lot of money.

Marketing is important. Do you get out to bull sales in your area? Are you a member of your local cattlemen's group, or the state Limi Assn? Do you performance test your bulls so you can compare them with other bulls? All those things will give you an opportunity to get to know cattlemen and them get to know your program. Good luck....
