I need a review on what I have learned about black cattle. Recently I had a discussion with a co-worker on the farm where I work and they were telling me how there vet raises Gelbvieh. I asked red or black, they replied black. Now I thought that breeds that were originally red such as, Gelbvieh, and Limousin turned black because Angus was thrown in there for color, then bred out of them. This co-worker told me that the blacks came about much like how red angus did with red or diluted gene. Only these had a black gene. This animals were then bred to each other and bam you got another color animal. So someone pleas review me...lol DOC HARRIS??? Dun??? Anyone?

You are right. Black is a dominant gene. So if the animals had the gene at all, like your co-worker is saying, then the animal would have been black in the first place. The black had to bred into them.

Your co-worker needs to study Genetics 101 and also the Gelbvieh breed

So I was right? Explain to me again how it works.

Black is dominant, Red is recessive. To have a Red animal you HAVE to have 2 red genes(e). With Black being dominant, even 1 copy of the black gene (E) will make the animal black. There is NO way that 2 red colored animals can have a black calf.

That is the basics of it.

Okay and how did they breed Angus into Gelbvieh, and Limousin to get black?

They justbred red Gelbvieh or whatever to a black Angus bull, or vice versa and bred the resulting black generations to red Gelbviehs or whatever and selected for black color and bred them up to purebred status. Basicly what the black Hereford people did
