Retained placenta

What would cause a retained placenta in an 8 year old cow that otherwise has never had any problems?

Minerals, hard delivery, age, any number of things.

The retained ones we get are with preemie births and twins.

I feel mineral is the main cause. Only one I ever have in years has been in 2 sets of twins. But never touched them and in a couple days they past them also.

Would feeding MSG pellets heavy (10 pounds per head daily) during the winter have any effect on it? I fed hi mag during the winter and spring, should I have fed a hi cal mineral?
