Noticed the other day, that some of our cows were breathing kind of hard, like they do in real hot weather, but not to the extent of with mouths open or tongues out.
It had been kind of hot then we had the aftermath of Helene. It cooled off some but the air felt dense and we actually noticed some issues breathing. I don't know if it's a coincidence, or something running through the herd. We treated two calves with Draxxin that seemed like had pneumonia symptoms. They are better, but we are going to vet office today to ask about it and probably get more Draxxin as I think a couple cows need treating too now.
Is anybody else seeing this?

Noticed it a little with some feeder calves, but these had spent the weekend with about 100 other calves at a show so that didn't help. It was extremely humid over the weekend through Monday, which is when I noticed it. Not terrible, but more rapid than usual when they're laying around. The humidity really dropped off yesterday, and their breathing looks normal now.

We treated 4 more cows today, Total of 6 cows and 2 four month old calves still on their first calf mothers. The first cows and calves treated have responded well and appear to be back to normal now.
Local vet said that there was quite a bit of things running through cattle now.
I know it can happen, but this the first time outside of something we've bought that had shipping fever, that I've had any illness like that in my cows. Every once in a while might be some kind of pneumonia in calves in the summer or fall.
It's more common for us in bought calves, that are going through weaning.

Well it is the dead calf month. It goes to show you that it does effect cows also. We get the summertime pneumonia stuff when it gets hot and dusty. Some of the cows will pant some but I seldom treat them and they are usually over it in a couple days. For calves its usually easy to overcome with a Draxxin shot.

I have found that if the Draxxin doesn't work, Zactran will and visa versa. Most of the time a shot of either if given when first noticed will do the trick. A dart gun is great for these situations.

Treated a calf yesterday for pneumonia. It's incredibly dry and dusty and the temps have been unseasonably hot. Cows are doing fine. But it makes me nervous because I'm weaning on the 13th. Already stocked up on Draxxin, Banamine Transdermal and Resflor Gold.🤞

The thing that surprises me is so far none of the weaned calves here have come down with anything ( admittedly a few of this rounds weaning are pretty crappy calves).
Hoping everything goes well with weaning for y'all.

Are you vaccinating cows with a live vaccine or only calves once weaned?

I can use some advice on this subject as well. Its been real dry and dusty. One of my steers started coughing last week. I heard it from a distance, went to inspect but I did not see any watery eyes on any of them but today, I heard that cough again, went to inspect found one of them with watery eyes. no nasal discharge and no drop in appetite. but he's a little lethargic and didn't bolt off when I touched his nose like he usually does. I hate having to stress him by hauling him to the vet. Can I try a shot of antibiotics to see if it clears it up ? does the feed store sell anything for things like this?

No on the feed store. If you have a vet that you work with, he will probably sell you what you need or write you a prescription where you can order something online.

I would ask him for a bottle of his favorite and then you will have some on hand.
