Some people do not deserve respect. Neither do those same people deserve disrespect.

Edited to clarify: This came from a poster hanging in one of my college Psych classrooms - don't recall who it was attributed to, if anyone.

I can agree with that only in that those not deserving respect deserve nothing at all.

I was listening to a talk show a long time ago. A woman stated that she didn't care what happened to her parents.

Ok, that stimulated a lot of conversation..."They're you're parents...they gave you life...you owe them respect for that."

Another woman called back in and said, "I understand what this woman said. My father sexually abused me from the time I was 7 years old on...and my mother knew it and did nothing to stop it."

Hey, as far as I'm concerned, that woman owed her parents NOTHING!

I try my best to give each person a full deck when I first meet them - they can pull cards from it if they wish.

i agree with you all but in kinda different way. Respect is earned, honor is given unconditionally.
Honor your parents cause they gave you life, respect them because of how they acted.
Honor the President or Prime Minister because of the office they hold, but respect what they do.
Honor is a God given thing "thing".
Respect is an earned "thing"

There are folks on this board who have a huge circle of influence. Some have more respect than others. Some have been banned from this board. To many I am not only respectful and grateful, but appreciative too.

What we have to bear in mind is that each of us are different and each of us communicate in a different manner. In some cases, a few maybe be trying to reach out, but truly don't know how to go about it.

The problem is the PC world and too many people wear there feelings on there shirt sleeve. Everyone has a right to there opinons and views. You only get offended because you want to. People are just like a herd of cattle in there reactions and actions there is always a lead cow and one bringing up the rear. The truth is just not the in thing today.

I think the truth should always the in thing with those earning respect. Some times it may be better to just keep ones mouth shut but the truth should be the only thing spoken. And sometimes the truth hurts but a lie may hurt even worse later.

CB I am not jumping on you as you tell the truth as I have observed.

The problem comes in what people see take a coffee cup on a table with the handle pointing north place 4 people in a room at NSEW and ask them what they see. Not one person can see all sides so they form there opinons based on one sided information. Three know that is has a handle on one side of the three one doesn't know if there is a handle on the south side.
The person on the south side is convinced ther is no handle at all.

I think i miss the times when right was right and wrong was wrong. Truth was the in thing. Please and thank you' were a sign of repect and Mr & Mrs was the way to address your elders.
And politically correct was a good politician.
I'm not old to say the least (under 40), but in today's world truth, right and wrong are no longer black and white. Now, its relative with many many shades of grey.
If that is progress???

Well put.
I also miss the days when people valued personal freedom and realized that freedom and responsibility went together.
Of course that was before the liberal do-gooders decided to do everybody's thinking for them.

See, now you disrespected all the liberals. ;-)
