I have a 5 month old black angus heifer, that i am going to show at the fair next year, but what should i be feeding her. I am going to keep her as a replacement female. I am looking for the grain ration, because I am freefeeding her hay.

thanks for any help or input

We feed a mixture of corn gluten pellets, soy hull pellets and oats with a little molases. I's a great growing ration and she won't get too fat.

what quantities of feedstuffs are in it?

Do you mix it yourself?

We have it mixed at the COOP. I'm picking some up tomorrow and I'll let you know how much of each ingredient. I'm having a senior moment and can't remember the exact ratios.

If you're looking for coop feed I'd reccomend 894176 which the 14% Hi E feed w/ ruminsen. Then next spring I'd start mixing in some of their winner's circle feed. We've had pretty good results with this.

Gluten's not a very good feed for show cattle IMO

what is in the 894176 which the 14% Hi E feed w/ ruminsen, what is the recipe so that my co op could mix it. Is there any feed like show chow or anything like that? that would work.

The 894176 is really good for growing calves and putting pounds on. All around good feed. It won't put a show finish on them so we start to gradually switch to the show feed about a month before our 1st show. I can't find the online label, but it is one that coop makes. Ask about it. I'll see if I can't get our scanner to work.....

We feed our replacements heifers free choice hay and 5lbs of 14% Range Pellet and they do just fine on that. They are born Jan/Feb and by April 1st they will average 1000lbs. They have nice cover, breed instantly and carry nice flesh for the summer as well. The good ones are always in the right flesh to show for summer as well.

I forgot to add that while all of this fancy show feed sounds good it mostly isn't neccesary.

A few pounds of rolled corn might be as extensive as you might need.

Keep the mineral in front of them.

I guess I misunderstood your first question. There is a difference between a growing ration and a show feed ration. At five months of age I would be feeding her a growing ration. If you start her on show feed now there is a good chance she will be too fat by the time your fair next year, and you don't want that.

For our show cattle we feed the Purina Grand 4 T Fyer mixed with corn, oats, beet pulp and molasses.
