Regarding docility....

Docility of a bull is important to me in my small operation (20-25 head), cause I'm just too old to do much bullfighting. I'm bull-shopping now, and another factor I'm trying for is the lack of fence crawling tendencies. I've been using angus, and fence-crawling has been a major problem with the last 3 that I've had. Yes, my fences are in good shape, 5 strand barbed wire. At least they start out in good shape. After the bulls make a trip or two over or under, they generally need some repairs.

So the question is--Do we think there might be a particular breed of black bull that might not manifest this trait? I'm tending toward brangus, 'cause they're pretty handy around here, but have never really dealt with them very much.

sounds like your dealing more with testosterone, than docility . ive had gentle bulls that get caught up on the homework and go cat'in next door . a brangus will be just as bad if he has a strong labido, sounds like a hot wire is in order

Black Angus are notorious for crawling fences. Cows can be just as bad as bulls. (donning flame suit :tiphat: )

Brangus are popular here.

Too bad you specified black.
A good hot wire strung inside the barbed wire should work.

We normally keep our bulls in a stout pen with an eletrical wire running all around the inside. They learn to respect the fence right away.
Had a black bull that was turning into a fence wrecker. He was sent down the road and we went back to straight Herefords, but some of them will crawl the fence too.
Have a bull right now that the breeder was concerned about because he was so calm, he was worring that he would not breed. He's calm until you put him out with a herd of hot cows. ;-)
When we buy a bull we like to walk in the pen with them and see how they act. We like them calm too.
