What is the average cost of a Red Angus heifer weanling? My daughter is looking to purchase one for showing at the fair. Not sure if prices vary in different parts of the country. The heifers she is looking at are average, nothing with award winning sires or damns. One breeder we know in the area, said $1700. Does that seem reasonable? Talked to another guy that said $1500 because she is a 4-Her.

You can get 'em for under $1000 down here. I bought two 3 or so yrs ago for $1500 total. Both with papers. Actually, one was a Senegus(1/8 Senepol). The Senegus has turned out to be the better of the two at raising a calf. And that's what it is all about to me.

In some parts of the country you could get an average red angus for under 1000.00. another option- Feed it, train it, clean it, show it and give it back when your done.

Unless they crap platinum that's a whole lot more then they're worth in my opinion. 50% over the value of a heifer as a feeder calf is about what I expect to pay. If going to FFA/4H kids we sell them for substantially less, closer to the actual market value

$1700 seems high to me. Around $700 to $1000 seems more reasonable to me -- of course it depends on what you're gettin' too. For what it's worth, my advice is to shop around a bit. BTW, does it have to be red angus? I like 'em and all but what about a hereford? I think they are great for 4H.... :cboy:

A $1000 seems fair to me; but I have never married or had kids so never have purchased show quality calves. Around here ANYTHING goes from pulling a calf off of one of your own cows to paying $2500 or more.

Those are pretty cheap for a show heifer, but if she looks good and looks pretty showy, heck yeah buy her. Take care. :cboy:
