How difficult is it to differentiate (via palpation) between cows who conceived at timed A.I. date and those who conceived on the next cycle 20 days later if timed a.i. date was 6-24-13? Is it a crap shoot? Thanks!!

(i.e. 6 month pregnancy vs. 5 month 10 day pregnancy)

The main difference is going to be cotyledon size and depth of the pregnancy. Both pregnancy stages are going to be deep in the body cavity so it's a crap shoot that you'll even be able to get deep enough to feel the differences.

Well I guess that is somewhat encouraging, the vet was out and would mention every once in a while if one was "nice big calf" indicating the cow took A.I. Unfortunately, the number of times he indicated an early pregnancy would only yield a 20% conception for me! Just wondering how difficult it would be to tell and if some extended time would be needed to be more accurate. There were times where he was in for only a few seconds and had his answer.

That's the black and white of it. There's not much difference in 20 days and the later the pregnancy the harder it would be to tell. Early on, say 3-4 months, cotyledon size and horn size is a pretty good indicator.

When the difference in age is between 6 and 9 weeks it would be quite simple to tell after that its anybody's guess
