I'm looking for something to pull an rv trailer. A truck does have the seating capacity that I need. This Ford Excursion has three seats, a diesel engine and pulling package. I'm not familiar with this vehicle, never laid eyes on one, that's why I need to pick someone else's brain. Does anyone have any experience with the Excursion or the 7.3 or 6.0 liter engine that they had in them. Ford stopped production on them in 2004. Is there another vehicle of this type being sold. Thanks in advance. Don

I've rode a lot of miles in one and their a nice vehicle. The one I traveled in, was a 99 model with the 7.3 it averaged 17 mpg. The engine started knocking at just under 400k miles. The guy that owned it was a maintenance freak, but he hauled a 31' foot boat all over both coast. Anyone know why Ford quit building them? Seems to me they had a good share of the large SUV market.

I walked out and asked my diesel mechanic he said it wasnt a green enough motor and asked him to elaborate he said it would never in a million years pass the emissions tests that are in place.

google "2003 Ford Excursion Diesel 6.0 reviews" to get reviews. Everything I saw said that it is a good truck. You may find something different.
I had a 4x4 3/4 ton Suburban when our kids were younger. It was a good truck. However, it was the truck that taught me to turn off the overdrive when pulling a trailer (automatic transmission). It was handy.

I would like the option of taking family with us sometimes. Four adults and a couple of kids would be cramped in a truck. Thought about a used motor home but my pockets are not deep enough. :=)

I have a v-10 excursion and love it. Gas mileage sucks but roomy and comfortable with plenty of power. As a whole the 7.3 is the preferred diesel but I have owned both with 200k plus on the motors and had good service out of both.

If your set on a diesel, go 7.3 hands down. About 2 yrs ago I bought a clean used Excursion 02' Lariat with a v-10 and 140k on it. Got it for 5k, mainly due to the v-10...sign me up for another one.I have can average around 15 mpg on the highway @ 65-70 and around town, it is in 11-12 mpg. On the highway running 80-90, its 12-13 range. I have never towed with it. I think the later v-10 had the 3 valve per cylinder heads with more power??
I put a wheel chair lift(swing out boom style) in the back of mine for my wife to carry her electric chair and we can still keep the 3 rows of seats.

Man Salt you must be living right 10 mpg is the best I can do in mine. Any ideas where that extra 5 is coming from? Bad mileage aside it is a sweet ride and I will buy the fuel for that kind of comfort, power, and safety. Got mine for 6k same reason. All the diesels I found were 16k & up and I wanted a gas job for running the kids around. The wife won't wait for a diesel to warm up!!

Diesels are 16-18k plus here. Mpg stated for my v-10 are on target.

The only recommendation for the Ford Excursion diesel engine I have is I wish they still made them in the 7.3. It will be a hard to find one with low mileage that will cost anything less than a good war pension. I would look at the gas burners.

SmokinM, Thats what the computer says when I reset. I dont figure its far off, though. I do know, I can buy alot of gas for difference in pump price of fuel vs. mileage of both.
