What size do most of you use when hauling hay, 2" or 3"? Mainly hauling on a gooseneck short hauls, wanting to secure over the top run. Also do you prefer the flat hook or wire hook ends?

2" with wire hook ends. Top row with one bale in the center of each valley. Hook two wire ends together to reach from front to back down the middle with a ratchet part on each end to tighten. One diagonal strap across the back lower two to pull them forward and together. Three total straps. One bale on the neck if you are brave with that top center strap set going over it and back to the front lower frame in the center. Legal? I don't know.

On short hauls I don’t strap any unless I put a roll on the neck of the trailer then I use a 2” strap for it. Never lost one yet.

3inch (rated 6k lbs) just because they are longer. I'm sure my 2 inch rated (3300 lbs)would handle it just fine.

I haul 3'X3'squares on my goose neck trailer. 3 bales across on the 2 lower layers and 2 across on the third. tie down with one 2" strap over the center of each row. ended up tipping a load of corn stalk bales pulling into a guys driveway during a snow storm. did not break a strap. could have set trailer upright and load would have looked the same as before it tipped over. wasn't a good day that day. no preference on hook type.

I was in the hay business for 10 years, small squares. Used 2" straps, like the wire hooks best.

I like the 2” straps and wire hooks as well. They will be plenty for what you are doing.

3” straps across each stack side to side. We haul through several hills and sharp curves and our 4x5s on top row can shift pretty good if not strapped down, especially if double stacked on top. It might be overkill for some folks, but it’s Worth the time strapping down for peace of mind for us. See several bales in ditches around here Through the year where people lose some.

I prefer the 2" with flat steel hooks, take the hooks down the outside of the rub rail and back up through a stake pocket hooking it on the outside edge. Won't come loose while you're strapping it down and will stay put should something happen on the road. 30' long will go over 5' diameter rolls double stacked top and bottom, 27' will go over a single row on top. Buy one and cut it off at 12' long, you'll be surprised at how handy it is without having to deal with 15' of tail all the time!

I've had good luck with the S-Line and Vulcan brands, for what it's worth.
