Hey guys, I'm a hereford guy but I also have some commerical cows and also a small number of registered Angus. I steered all of the Angus bull calves except for one. He's a R/M Ironstone 4047 x Winney 8122 son. What do you think of him? I will only use him in my herd. I'm always interested in learning more of what I should be looking for. Any help is appreciated.

Here's more info on him.
82lb BW
287 days old.
WW. I need to re weigh him. Operator error!
48.2in tall
35cm scrotal

Well... if you want a fair appraisal, you maybe should put up some better pictures! When you take the photos from above him, you make him look shallow and off-balance. I think he's probably better than the pics make him look....

True. Thanks for the advice. I took them with my phone camera and when I previewed them I thought to myself man he looked better in person! lol. Where i've got hay is on a sideslope so that doesn't help either. I'll try to get better pictures tomorrow.

You need to take the pics from a lower angle.

lol. ok, I'll try to get better pics. I'm sure I'll get lots of "cut him" comments but I guess i'm trying to learn a little bit as to what are his negatives before or IF I band him. Don'tjust say everything! ;) lol.

I don't like the way his feet line up. They look like they're splayed outward like so \ / when they should be like this | |.

Now that you mention it, I see it now. I should've been looking better. In my cows I look at udders/teets, topline, how they walk, eyes and lastly phenotype. This is or will be one of the only bulls I keep back for a commerical herd, but I may be better off cutting this one and buying a bull. This one's size and shape were just better than all the rest.

I think the first pic is the best representation. If it wasn't cold and windy here I'd get out and get a better pic. I think his body and shape is better than his pics give him credit for. Bad photo camera guy here. But I do see the feet now.

I take it his pedigree, is the biggest reason you kept him.... when you'r taking pictures, they are always moving , bending, and standing awkward, watching you seeing what your up to... gotta catch em relaxed to some degree... he's shallow, with no muscle.. but he does have a good top line :cowboy:

I tried to talk him into a perfect pose but he wouldn't listen! lol.

I did like his sire, but actually the other angus pairs I bought all had papers from GAR Predestined, Conneally Final Product and R/M Ironstone. His dam has a lot of milk and good growth and Ironstone looks like a good carcass sire although not a low birthweigh bull by any means.

As far as being shallow, when he was all slicked off this summer he had a lot of muscle but I wonder if weaning and then I fed him for 30 days and I hate tosay it, I'm probably not the expert on feeding bulls. I then kicked him out on irrigated corn stalks and he'll probably be there until Jan. and then I'll feed him with the rest of my bulls. His hair has gotten longer but I do see what youre saying on shallow. Would my feeding have anything to do with it? 10#/day of a product called mp14%. A mix of corn, milo, alfalfa, etc. I also gave him free choice prairie hay and hand fed a small flake of dairy quality alfalfa and mineral available at all times.

If you're going to retain heifers or bulls, they need to not only meet but excel under your normal conditions without special treatment. Doesn't seems he's meeting that goal. My.02

Hook you need to raise yourself a few bulls. I would like to see them when you do.
We really need a sarcasm emoticon.
I've only left 2 intact to see if they panned out and they didn't. That may change since we're using AI now. But then again I never claimed to be a bull breeder or even a replacement breeder

Could be but I don't think the genetics were there. Those were just borrowed bulls. There's a picture floating around of one of the bulls I used. And that's the main reason I went to AI. As you can see from the picture of the op's bull calf, even with good genes there's no guarantee the animal will pan out.
I'll leave the bull raising to the people who know more about than I do.
