Did an 8:30 check. Nothing going on. Pretty quiet.
Just did a check at midnight.
Found a first year heifer had calved along with an 8 yo cow.
They are together.

Heifer is bawling like crazy and trying to get to her calf which is circling the cow.
Cow is trying to claim both calves.
Cows calf is trying to get to the heifer.
Once they are seperated you can tell which calf belongs to which cow.
rest of the bred cows are being a massive pain in the backside. Have a 6 yo cow trying to get into the act.

Grabbed the heifers calf and start carrying it to the barn to put them in a pen together and 8 cows decide to go in and cause trouble. they get the heifer stirred up so she will not follow her calf, calf is put in a pen.
Go back and get the second calf on the sled to get it in the barn. i look up and there goes the cows back into the barn along with the heifer. Run up and start chasing cows out. Get the heifer in the pen with her calf. She is so happy she is bawling like crazy.
Go back to get the second one again and now the cow is ticked off and blowing snot at me. I slap her across her snout and yell a few bad words at her. She leads her calf into the barn.

Now I have a different 5 yo cow bawling, blowing snot and kicking up her heels and acting like she is going to take me. So i start chasing her around the pen. Yelling at her to knock her crap off.
Guess that proves I'm as crazy as my cows. :D

I'm sitting here chuckling about how silly this all was and thought everyone would get a kick out of how funny it is. Gotta have a sense of humor and laughter is a stress release. :D :D :lol2:
 
All's well that ends well and you got a workout into the bargain :cowboy:

The world as we knew it got shook up a little for Jersey breeders when DNA testing revealed a group that weren't 100% ... because a cow and a cow swapped their newborn calves three generations before.
 
lol, we all have nights like this, this is why we live in the middle of nowhere, so we can chase our cows round in the middle of the night yelling naughty words at them and calling them names without the neighbours having us committed.

Me too. I dont have any cows though. :lol:
 
Is it a full moon? We've had a couple of wild ones here today too. We have the Calf Catcher that attaches to the four-wheeler (a side-by-side in our case) and for the first time, we had a cow attack the catcher - charged it - attacked the wheels, etc. We were happy to be inside the cage and that we weren't using a regular four-wheeler - she would probably have come over the top!
 
My crazy 3yo cow just had her calf tonight.

Got them both in the barn. Cow was just bawling like crazy. Got them settled in the barn and out of the wind. Fed the bred cows that are left.
Walked back into the barn to check them and the cow has laid down right next to her calf to try and warm her. The cow refused to get up and come eat the hay I pitched in the barn. I had to move it in front of her so she would eat.
Cow would take 2 bites of the hay then bawl and start licking the calf.

This is one of the cows that lost her calf last year and moped in the barn until I got her another calf.
crazy cow. :)
