Seems like there was a lot of talk about track safety at that time as well.
Yes it was. They perhaps should have taken a closer look at the track and walls as well at that time.

Daytona claims they will put SAFER barrier around the entire track, outer and inner walls. I saw a report of $500/ft. So when they say cost won't be a consideration they better mean it.
