heres a question
would you rather bale hay thats been rained on already or bale hay that hasnt been rained on and you can only do one of the fields because it is about to rain and they both produce the same amount of crops. would you suffer getting it rained on twice or bale the one that has been rained on already and let the other one get soaked?

That has got to be the stupidest question I have ever seen posted on here. Why on earth would you let a hay crop get rained on if it is fit to be baled in the first place. So my answer would be yes I would rather bale as much of the field as I can before the rain started instead of sitting on the porch drinking lemonade in the sun waiting for the rain and then watching the entire crop get wet. I've got to know what do you think you will possibly gain from letting the whole crop get soaked as oppossed to half of the crop being soaked? Do you think you will have a more uniform crop that way? That may be a way to insure you will have consistantly low quality hay.

Glover, we have afternoon thunderstorms here from the gulf. These are very unpredictable and this happens here a lot. Personally, I bale the field that will yield the best hay. In my opinion, the one that got wet is already lost so I prefer not lose them both. That way, I got one good cutting and one cutting for filler.

i geuss i would let the one get soaked because its no good if you raked it then it got rained on for the second time just because the hay would go all black and moldy

Glover, you basically answered you own question. Don't rake until you absolutely have time for it to dry. Hay can get 4-5 dumps of rain on it, and be ok, brown but ok. Rain after turning it once and you might as well burn it. Bale the one that hasn't gotten rained on first. When a long dry spell comes, rake the other one and get it up.
