I run 1 paint mare 1 mammoth jack 3 jersey nurse cows, 30 beefmaster cows and 1 charolais bull. cows dont eat horses tail.

Ive run my horses with my cows for quite a few years, and never had a problem except one horse and one mule that would chase down calves. I just kept them out when I had calves.

The little POA I had pastured with 30 jersey heifers would beg to disagree...bless his little short-tailed heart. :)

is it safe to put a horse in with cows? ive heard that the horse will bite the cows. is this tru?

Depends on the horse. Some will get along fine with cows and some will spend all their time chasing the cows. Put him out there and keep an eye on him. Sometimes they will get along for a while, and once the horse gets more confidence he will become a problem.

This is a question that has been asked a few times in the last couple of years. Do a search in this board "horses with cattle" you should get a few threads and lots of answers. Seems like for the most part it no trouble, but you do get horses that chase cattle, seems like a couple of post on horses and/or mules killing calves.

Try a search,
Alan

thanx guys now i can rub it in my dads face that it should hopefully be ok. and i luv ur guys hereford pics!! arent herefords the cutest little things uve ever seen! they also make great show cattle cause there so calm.

Does depend on the cows and horses but my horses and cows are together most of the summer and they have no problems. They all got their exercise too lol. The horses would sometimes chase the cows but none of them would get hurt by doing it. They were just playfull with eachother.

The only time we really have trouble is during the winter when we are feeding. The horse/s will chase the cattle away from the feed, and if it is slippery then you can really have problems. During the summer on pasture the horses mostly stick to themselves.

You also need to make sure your ponies don't eat feed with urea in it.
We did have a big TB gelding who use to kick the calves around pretty bad. We kept him in a corral when we weren't using him.
I kind'a want the cows to be wary of the ponies. It seemed easier to move cows who didn't trust ponies. BUT, if we bought a horse who was afraid of cows, it happens, then we'd put the horse in a pipe corral with a calf until the horse settled down.

it depends on the horse. the main problem with horses and cows is that when the horses go to running for whatever reason the cows get out of the way! calves tend to get hurt when this happens.

I've had my spotted gelding in with cows for the last 2 months. The only problem I have is that the horse has taken up with the cows and wants to fight you while riding so he can join the cows. He doesn't like to be seperated.

This is the correct answer. Mike also hit the nail on the head with watch the feed.

i had rather have several head of horses in with the cows than just one . why? because their clannish and stick together. and less likely to bother them then when there is just one you can bet they will be problems when you aint around. i keep my ol arthritic rope horse with my heifers. but he could care less about running em he had enough of that in his younger years ;-)

The feed is an issue- horses tend to be more aggressive and will run off the cows. Also some feed additives are fatal to
equines. I have a pony that the calves in the lot next to the
pony chewed up his tail pretty bad! ( dummy pony for
standing so close to the fence! :x ) I keep the bovines
and equines separate. ;-)
