WHAT is up with vegemite ????
'lil brother just got back from a month stay & brought me a jar: I have 2 words for it....... Eee - Yuck !

Hey Waspfarmer I'm with you on that one Veggiemite, Marmite and Bovril.....all yuk yuk and double yuk.....Veggimite and marmite are the same thing under a different brand name and Bovril is of Beef extract in case you don't have it there. It's one of those you either love or hate :frowns:

Vegemite tastes waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy better than Marmite. I love Vegemite, but Marmite make's me throw up. SO I'm guessing they must be different.

purhaps it is the ingredients that are a bit different, both are vegetable based, but I still hate them both.

I was hoping someone would answer this before I was dumb enough to ask. What is vegemite?

Bovril is the same as OXO, basically.

I like OXO and bovril, but not Marmite. We don't get vegemite over here.

My dear Chrissy, OXO also makes a spread exactly like Bovril and it is even available in the UK shops. I lived there for three years and regularly bought OXO. You also get it in SA, I'll take a photo of the jar if you like.

sorry did not mean to tread on your toes, I have not seen OXO spread for a while so thought they may have taken it off of the market here.

You're not alone. Only thing I know about it is it was mentioned in an old "Men at Work" song. Somebody please enlighten us.

VanC, I had only heard it in that song and didnt realize there really was such a thing until I went to Australia. It is sold in many different packages, but I saw it alot in small pats in foil like butter. It is a spread that is used on bread to make a "vegemite sandwich". My opinion was that it tastes exactly like road tar smells. However, I know alot of people who love it.
