Who made Long Tom shotguns?
I have a single shot sixteen guage shotgun. The only lettering on it says "LONG TOM" and "barrel and lug forged in one piece". I had forgotten all about it until my lovely bride was cleaning today and asked me about it... I'm clueless but I did manage to convince her that throwing it away wasn't a good idea... It doesn't appear to be anything of quality but guns are guns and old guns are even better guns... almost as good as new guns!
Anyone ever heard of it?
 
Ithica made the long Tom. I don't know much about them but you may have one of those sweet 16's that kenny or 3 way would drool over

Chances are it's choked ful plus and kicks like he[[. Doesn't mean get rid of it just be ready if you shoot it. Probably make a great turkey gun!
 
A few years back my Dad calls me and says "My 12 ga is not back from Benelli yet and can I borrow your Black Eagle." I say sure thing as I am laughing my a$$ off.

The best part is he feels like he needs to pattern my shotgun. So I load it up with a 3 in turkey load and instead of shooting it standing up he decides to sit in the gravel at the shooting range and try it.

Needless to say it made him plow a foot long furrow with his skinny little a$$ and he is still mad at me today over it. As I am sure you can tell I am pretty heartbroken that he got thumped so hard.
 
Long Tom was a trade name sold by Sears Roebuck. They were manufactured by Crescent Firearms before 1930 and by Stevens/Savage after that. Probably last made around 1945.
 
I have a 12 ga 3" made by H&R single shot w/36" full choke. Bought it new in '65. It's a squirrel killing machine. It's about worn out, sometimes it won't eject and that ain't good. Thought about sending it back to H&R for repair but afraid they would lose it. We have a lot of miles and memories together.

i may be wrong hook, but i don't know of any "off brands" that Ithaca made. my family was big on Ithaca shotguns. after the japanese started making them, we kind of lost track of their products. i would be interested to know if Ithaca did make any "off brands". i have to say, the straighest shooting slug gun i ever used was a J.C. Higgins bolt action 20 gague.
 
I used to own one of those long barreled single shot 12 ga with 3" chamber I think it was an H&R but it might have been a savage/stevens.
 
I could swear my wife's dad had a Ithaca in 16 that said long Tom on it. But I can't answer your question of sellin under other names.

The Ithaca Model 66 had a variation called the "longtom". But if this one is an Ithaca M66 it will say Ithaca somewhere on it. H&R also had a longtom, but unless it was made for someone else it will have H&R on it somewhere.
 
Thanks all. Just offhand I'd say Hoss nailed it but I'll do some digging later today and follow up on it. Somewhere around either here or my dad's place I have a box of the old cardboard shells that came with it.

That reminds me of myself at about 10 years old. My grandad always shot a full choke long barrel 12 ga for everything. Only shot gun he owned after his other guns were stolen. Anyway, he took me dove hunting and the old single shot 4-10 I was shooting jammed. While he was repairing it, I picked his up ignoring his warning. Even with a light load, it knocked me on my butt and made an impression.

I would be intereted in a 16 in the Long Tom. Had a Winchester model 370, 12ga with a 36 in barrel just a couple of weeks ago. Had my nephew shoot it so I could guarentee it to shoot. It shot well and kicked the shi$ out of him. Sold it the same day. :lol2:
 
While on the subject here... I'll ask for some advice.. I have an old Cooey 12ga, barrel sawn off to 18", I have 3" shells, Federal Target loads #7 with 1 1/8th ounce shot 1140 FPS... what distance and spread can I expect from it.. I'm looking at shooting crows in trees or on the ground.
