CB, have you ever shot 00 buck through a turkey choke? Will it damage the choke and is it safe? I am curious on how it will pattern.

I have shot it out of a full choke not an extra full turkey. Couldn't hit the side of the barn with the pattern.
The pellets get bunched up in that tight of choke and get flatened out on one or more sides. This cause's the pellets to sail. I have never got double aught to give really good pattern's out of anything tighter than Improved modified.
I don't consider a good pattern of buckshot until I can put 70% of the pellets in a paper plate at 40 yards.
I wouldn't shoot it out that tight of choke if it were me could bulge the barrel.

Now hand load up a load of lead F's 22 cal or T's 20 cal pellets should be a bad ass load.
Twenty seven F's to the ounce 36 T's now make sure they are lead.

Gracious - would have thought a normal full choke would be fine out to about 45 yards - it sure is with mine.

I deer hunt with mine I wouldn't bat an eye to shoot at one in an opening at 70 yard's.
But I have extensively patterned my gun's and hand loaded to prefect the load for each gun.
The one I hunt with 90% of the time will put 8 out of 8 in a baseball cap pattern.
Now each shotgun is different some will never pattern well no matter what the load.
I have only ran into that a couple of times over the years.
As a rule of thumb most full chokes prefer # 1 and # 4 Buck.
Modified single 0 and double 00.

I agree with alot what was said I wont bat an eye at one in an opening 100yds I have customer work done to my guns choke my chokes are around 4 inches long. The type of ammo you are using depends on what your gun will do you gotta shoot what your gun likes not what you like. I also shoot copper plated buckshot it is dont quote me but like 200 fps faster than pure lead. Here we hunt primarily with shotguns and I hunt everyday from 2nd weekend in Nov - Jan for the last 8 years and I have seen so many people make the mistake of shooting what they like instead of what the gun likes and using chokes that are to tight and made for turkey load and rarely kill a deer. These pellets were taken from a deer i shot and killed 97 steps away that ran out into a powerline.

Buckshot is not legal here in TN for deer but I am thinking about hitting the timber for coyotes. Shots would be from 20 to 75 yards and moving. I am set up with a turkey gun and have allot of buckshot laying around so I was curious if it was doable. I'll probably just stay with the Auto-5 with modified choke for that duty and just hope I can get them in closer.

Yes it is a Belgium made A-5. It was bought used by my Dad back in the 60's. It is the older style with the non-vent ribbed barrel just a smooth barrel and front bead sight. I have used it on deer (shoots slugs surprisingly well) pheasant, rabbit, doves, squirrels, quail, ducks and clays. Best all-around shotgun I have ever owned.

Sky I prefer unplated buckshot as they flatten out better upon impact. Copper plated shot came along before buffering to improve patterns. The shot tended to deform against each other trying to get out the barrel causing flyer's. Buffering does away with the problem and improves the pattern 100 fold over plating. Mix 47 sold by BPI is the best buffer material for pulling a pattern together.

Gotcha I do not reload so cant make my own customer shells but from my experience those copper plated federal premiums get the job done.

Well Sky it has been raining here all day. My squirrel hunting buddy ask yesterday if I would load him a box of special's for them tall pines. I replied I would be happy to and after some devious thought I did.
I loaded one out of every five with Black Powder. I am still snickering, I will give them to him Wed. night .
He gets a cat squirrel up a tall loblolly pine and touch's it off it will take ten minutes for the smoke to clear.
Now those black powder shotgun shells will kill just as far as today's new powder's, they just boom real loud and you have to wonder if you were on target. I imagine my ancestry will even be cussed way back

That is a horrrible thing to do to a fellow human being, much less a friend.
In fact it reminds me of some of the stunts me and a buddy of mine used to pull on each other. He was a great guy but had an "I've gotta be the big man " ego syndrome. I could bait him and make him fall for anything. :lol: :lol: :lol:
