Hello all, I'm new here and I've been lurking for the past week reading all your very informative posts. I've raised meat goats for the past 5 years and we very recently cut way back with the goats and branched out, just bought 3 bred registered longhorn cows. One 4 yr old cow (who has had her calf) is losing hair. Lots of hair. She looks to be going bald! She had a vet check before we bought her and he said she was healthy. No bugs that I can find, my first thought was lice or some other creepy crawly critter. What else can cause such a drastic loss of hair? :???: oh, and the other two cows look just fine, no hair loss.

Could be any number of things from lice to eating something toxic and including mange. But, the first thing I would do is pour her for lice, that's the simpiist and you might as well start there and at least eliminate that. I've never been able to see lice but pouring them in the srping has taken care of the problem. We use BOSS pour on in the spring for just that purpose.

this time of year most will shed all their long hair as new comes in

I have a 1/2 Jersey that does this each spring. She looks like she's going bald, but she's just shedding out and if you look close enough she's got all kinds of new hair coming in. In her case, it isn't lice, that's her normal shedding procedure.

What is the best way to apply the pour on? This gal isn't friendly and hasn't had much handling. Would a rub work?
A rub or dust bag would help, but may not get it all. Best if you can pen her between a couple panels if you don't have anything else. The pour on goes right down the middle of her back.

Take a garden hoe and duct tape a cup on to it. Then put proper dose of pour on in the cup. When she walks by just pour down her back. I sometimes use this method when their in the stock trailer as well. But, I normally give them shots and pour them at the same time. B&G

Mine always shed out in gobs... sometimes there is hair underneath.. sometimes just skin.

PLTannery, yes! She looks a lot like that :) maybe she is just shed out, but she looks awful. I will try some of these suggestions to get some pour on her. She's due for worming anyways. Thanks everyone.
