Has anyone ever bought a bale of sprigs and just disced them . I have a couple of thin spots in my hay field and my graze pasture . With all rain it might be a good time toput out some sprigs. These would be coastal sprigs.

sprigs are generally green tops. You would probably have limited success with sprigging dry hay. I would atleast wait until the chance of frost was over.

Yep
It is done all the time. I will be doing some myself in the spring. When I mow for hay I will run the square baler over it right after I cut and make some light bales for discing in.
That is if there is some moisture in the ground. It needs to be packed well after discing in.

Papa...have a friend who digs and sells them...he refers to them as "roots". Bales them in square bales (heavy as lead)......disk up the areas to be planted...spread them out good and disk again lightly and run a roller over them if you can. You should get a good stand.

In 04 a neighbor got a 16ft trailer loaded with stolons/roots of T85 and just pitchforked them off the trailer while the wife drove. He had disc'd the are a few times that winter. Then he drug a telephone pole over the top. A year later he had about 40 % coverage. Don't know how much he fertilized though.

In 08 I sprigged about 8 acres with coastal stolons and tops using what I would call a hand sprigger (not a chain feed type). I also used the telephone pole drag idea mainly to smooth the ground for spraying later. I had disc'd the area about 5 times that winter and also fertilized. By the end of summer 09 I had about 70% coverage. This year I hope to use it as a nursery for other areas.
