About a month ago we bought 31.1 lbs of Purina Beneful. Both dogs inside and outside are old but were very active. Now one is at the vets with kindey failure and the other has damage and is at home and recurapting. The inside dog which was a poodle/cocker cross. She started eating the beneful and after a week would eat and then throw up should have relized that something was wrong. The outside dog was a blue heeler german shepard cross. Both started drinking an adnormal of water and was not able to hold the urine and were wetting on every thing and ever where. I found the following website and seems a lot of people have had a lot of trouble with Beneful and right recently. Hope this makes some of you aware that Beneful might not be safe for your pets. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/pets/beneful.html

Thanks Hurley. Kinda curious what the Beneful folks have to say about this.

Sounds a lot like the aflatoxin symptoms that caused a big Kroger pet food recall a few years ago.

Q. Why is this pet food being recalled?
The product is being recalled because it may contain aflatoxin, which poses a health
risk to pets.
Q. What is aflatoxin?
Aflatoxin is a naturally-occurring toxic chemical by-product from the growth of the
fungus Aspergillus flavus on corn and other crops. It may be present in some cereal
grain crops, including corn, especially if exposed to high humidity or drought.
Aflatoxin can affect people and animals by causing illness and liver damage.
Q. What symptoms would my pet have?
Symptoms of aflatoxin exposure include lethargy, sluggishness, anorexia, vomiting,
bloody diarrhea and yellowing of the eyes. If your pet exhibits any of these
symptoms, please consult your veterinarian.

GB that was my first thought as well.
Ground yellow corn, chicken-by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour,

Pet foods manufacturers have to list the ingredients in descending order based on inclusion rate. Note that ground yellow corn is 1st. Also chicken "by-product" meal followed by the other junk. Good dog foods do not use any "by product" meals. They'll use "chicken meal" and other meat products. It's more of a high protein cattle feed than a pet food.

You'll probably see a re-call soon as if that will really help and a few lawsuits and the big boys will keep rolling.

Did you contact Purina? I certainly would and send them copies of your vet bills with a letter from your vet.

I hope that both dogs recover. And I am sharing this on my Facebook page too.

Probably wouldn't do any good. I think Purina would just blow you off. I once worked for a man who Purina sent some poisoned feed and it killed all his quail and put him out of business. The pathologist proved it was poisoned by some impurities and meds that were in the previous batch of feed meant for chickens and he had it all set out till the day of court when purina bought the pathologist and sent him on a vacation out of the country with all the evidence.

Several years ago, Purina messed up a batch of poultry feed. Just about every kid in our county who was feeding it lost their fair chickens. Purina stepped up, acknowledged the mistake and reimbursed the exhibitors for the loss of their birds.

This happened with dog vaccines a few years ago, killed some puppies, etc.. people I know pursued it and got nowhere-its hard to prove that their product is what killed or made the dogs sick, and these big companies are not going to just admit it

I wonder when this whole issue started. We lost a young weanie dog a cople of years ago that was being fed the stuff. Drov the vet nuts, his intestines basicly died and started decomposing.

I'm sure they ran a cost benefit analysis and ran this by their brigade of attorneys and figured it was in their best financial interest to not pi$$ off a whole county whereas destroying one single man's life's work would do little harm to their sales.

Sorry this happened! Never fed the Beneful, all the dyes to make the different color pieces didn't seem like it would be good. We have friends that feed it to their dogs and they are the picture of health, glossy coats and so on. Have fed Purina One before with good results. But for the last few years we have fed Iam's for large breeds, it has about the biggest chunks you can get. They can't inhale it, they have to chew it.

Couple of things: First, there's Nestle Purina which makes pet food and products and Purina/Land O'Lakes which makes farm animal foods. The two companies are entirely separate. Any issue with chick feed is a Land O'Lakes issue while dog food issues belong to Nestle Purina. Second, I can tell you that while Nestle Purina would prefer no issues at all they want to react very quickly to any situation. They want to know if there is a problem and they want to stop problems in their tracks. If you suspect a problem, get your vet involved, keep the dog food and bag and call the phone number found on the bag.

Thought I would give an update on the dogs. The inside dog died on Jan. 4 . The outside dog died this morning. I had tissue samples collected by the Vet he will submit to the lab along with the dog food. We will see where we will go from there. The Vet is willing to write a letter for me to submit. He said that the liver was the color of chalk. He also said the stomach was full of blood. Both dogs had not eaten any thing for a week before death. We tried every thing that the vet could think of to save the dogs. The vet thinks that because of the blood in the stomach that they had do feeling of hunger. I will update later as to the outcome with Purina.

Both companies make dog food, Nestle usually a much higher quality food but in this case "no".

I too am very sorry to hear about the death of your dogs :(

How in the h@ll do we get our government to stop all pet food companies from importing by-products from China to be used in factories here to make dog and cat food/treats ,importing pet food/treats made in China as well as putting ingredients in the food that have zero business being in them, like dyes etc .

They seem to want to stick their noses in every other facet of our lives and tell us what to do, but when a country is deliberately poisoning our pets they do not a dam thing !
