PTO shaft extender

To use my disc mower on another tractor the PTO shaft is too short. Would it be OK to use a 4" PTO extender or maybe a slip clutch added or just buy another PTO shaft? With the extra 4" added I think I can use what I got.

That would make my PTO shaft work but adds weight and more stress on the bearing at the disc mower shaft hookup. A new longer shaft is $400 and the clutch is $80. Putting a new bearing in the disc mower sure does not look like fun. Also the clutch is rated a 55hp and the tractor is 60hp. I can't find one stronger in the size.

Looks like an extender then.
How about checking the front part of a PTO off another machine and see if its longer. Slid the front part off and the other one on.

Don’t know if it is a pull or 3ph, if a pull type can you adjust your drawbar shorter? There are specific measurements for pto implements, end of pto shaft to drawbar pin hole.

I've used extenders but only the ones that have a bolt and pinch collar on the tractor side. The ones that use the normal style spring pin/slide collar add a bit of slop and vibrate.

I’ve used both but would never use spring pin/slide collar type again because of the slop and vibration you mentioned.

Here is the mower a Kuhn 7' 10" bar as I need a longer pto to work on the tractor I want. These are about 14k new. From checking over it needs some TLC and been stored in the big barn a lot but appears very low hours and all the bearings are like new tight. From watching videos every wear point has very little wear. They had a 25-year-old NH 4630 tractor that had 600 hours on it. It looks better in person than the pics. I am putting new belts, knives and whatever on the pto needed, changing the oil and that looks like it. The knives and shoes have very little wear and the tarp one very small hole. It was a big job getting the wasp out. Those big Tennessee yellow wasp are mean son of a guns.

Here was the 4630 turbo they sold there as it had 649 hrs on the working tack. It had some outside storage, very little wear though and appeared in very good condition. A little buffing and touch up paint would have done wonders.

I have a Kuhn mower -- I'd really suggest not using extensions and instead get the proper PTO length for your tractor. If you are just doing flat hay fields it may be ok -- but if you are trying to mow anything with elevations or ditches you will need to be adjusting the 3-pt height and you can inadvertantly get that pto angle really steep very quickly which I think would really stress any extensions (imo).

I do really like the design of the kuhn mowers (knock on wood) I've had very few issues with mine (other than hooking the thing up which can be a real pain).

Is the tractor you want to use the mower on to be the only tractor you will use the mower on. If so you can remove the shafts from each end of the present pto and replace them with the length desired.

The people that had the mower before cut the shaft to fit their tractor. It will fit my JD as it has shorter arms at the 3 pt., but not my NH that has longer arms. Done some measuring this morning and a clutch added next to the mower would make the pto shaft just about the right length and protect the mower. It will extend at the mower another 4" but should be balanced and maybe not shorten the bearing life. Kuhn's premium models have clutches on their drivelines.
