I currently have purebred black angus, and am wondering if there is any benefit to me to obtain registered black angus for my future purchases? What are the benefits?

It depends on what type of operations you plan to run. From the way you word the question, my guess is that you are going to be a cow calf producer. If the guess is right, I would be more concerned with the cows being good rather than registered.

The only benefit of having registered cows is that you can register their offspring and sell them to other people that want registered cows.

If you have a market outlet, the registered animals are worth more. I think it costs $30 a year to belong to the American Angus Association, $7 per calf to register by four months old. Other charges might be semen, an AI tech, and AI certificate. We've been raising registered Angus for almost 20 years now on a small scale. We make more money on the registered stock than we could make on the same number of commercial calves. But it does require more work and marketing to sell registered animals. Good luck....

What are your goals for your herd? Raising heifer replacements? Selling at the salebarn?

I'm sure any of the seedstock producers will tell you that the first few years of getting marketing established and recurrent buyers was a hard process.

I realize many chase those papers and epd's but many commercial bull buyers will "eyeball" that bull and buy according to what their cows lack. So purebred works for them. Quality speaks for itself and will bring a good price without papers.
