Earlier this morning I Googled 'hamburger in the beef market' trying to find the name of a market expert I heard speak last year at a conference. Wasn't looking carefully at what results I was clicking and ended up going to the peta.org website. After initially jumping back from my monitor I thought what the heck - let's just nose around a bit.
Outside the outlandish, breathless and unsubstantiated claims the more distinctive characteristic of the website was the maturity level of the writing, which I judged to be middle school female casual. I was reminded of some handouts (non peta) my kids would, years ago, bring home from middle school.
I may be wrong but I really thought this site was ineffective. They were clearly appealing for an emotional response using rather general adjectives and adverbs in rather simple sentences. Furthermore, they claim membership of 3 million and while I'm sure that figure is likely inflated, compared to the population of North America it isn't even a blip.
Now the problem most vegans have is they usually originate in a family of omnivores and I think it's pretty rare for a vegan to successfully recruit an omnivore out of the family to become a vegan. The difficulties sustaining a vegan diet along with the inability to recruit family to become vegetarians has to be disheartening and present an insidious pressure to give it up themselves. And like the prodigal son, I believe many vegetarians eventually return to the fold of omnivore.
