Problems with commercial hereford

I will say I have bought commercial herefords from 3 different cattle brokers and had more problems with them then commercial black angus and brangus. Things like digestion, abortion and not getting pregnant. Is this normal with registered as well. Are they more sensitive then black angus and brangus. I figured brangus is hardy due to the brahma but not sure about the angus. I have all 3 breeds as an expiriment to see which way to go for black baldies. I like the temperment of the herefords but they seem like they have have a lot of problem or am I extremely unlucky. I also thought they would do better in the Texas heat then the black ones. My blackies have been pretty good. Any one else have the same?
 
Were they acclimated before you bought them? We went with a Hereford bull on brangus, and that's the only way we would ever go here.
 
Thats the way I am leaning. I have half black angus, black brangus and hereford heifers to see which ones i liked. I am just having more problems with the herefords but the angus and brangus temperment are more volatile. I have 1 F-1 tigerstripe and she is pretty rough, not heading down that road for sure.
 
I am figuring that it is probably as others have said, available cattle, acclimation, etc. I have had a similar issue and chalked it up to just the cattle that I had purchased, the difference with my experience has been opposite. I had intentions of building a small herd of registered Angus. My first few were all culled due to dispositions, I was very careful after that to be very selective for calm disposition. I prefer to buy open heifers, sometimes bred heifers. I then brought in a few more Angus heifers, they did not and have not been regular breeders, and feet and leg issues in a couple of them. In the same time frame I bought a group of commercial Hereford heifers, with the intentions of reselling them later that year. I decided to try a few of them for cows. To my surprise each of them calved within a month, and raised good calves. I added a few more Hereford heifers. As a comparison of breeds in this herd, I have to say on average the Herefords are definitely more productive.
I will note though that in my opinion the best individual cow from a production standpoint of all things considered is an Angus cow. I also have some percentage Brahman, most are Hereford influenced, that are doing well as first calf heifers.

I'd go with the brangus for a number of reasons. My experience has been that if you get the semen anywhere close they'll usually stick.
 
Yes on the calving category that black brangus was a one hit wonder. First hit she took. She is under the one about the calf not eating creep feed. I had her AI'D to GAR advance angus bull for a low birth weight calf.
 
Ran a small herd for years no more problems with them than any other.
I prefer the Bradford cow an Angus bull to get growth and grade.
Don't get me wrong I love brangus they are just too high and I don't have the options I like that the Bradford provides.
I can change the entire calf crop color by changing the bull.
With brangus I am stuck on black.
 
The last idea that I was running through my head was hereford crossed with braford to get a tougher hereford cow for breeding. Anyone have this before. If not I may run this topic as a main headline. I am streamlining my herd to be uniform within the next few years. Right now I have a mix of hodge podge of 5 kinds of heifers running with a jersey bull for low birthweight calves. My end result will be black baldies. These cattle I have now will probably all be sold with in the next 2 years and I make a final decision on the kind of heifers I want to run. The bull will be easier to change out then the heifers.

Yes those look beautiful. I would be proud to have those on my property. I would throw a black brangus on those and call it a day. Are those yours?
 
The only problem with having a 1/4 brahman 3/4 hereford cow herd is...how do you get more replacements?

McFaddin in Victoria runs Herefords that are like 1/8 Brahman....they are super nice.

Yes they are and full sisters one took on the Brahman the other Hereford
characteristics.

Not any more the old fellow up here running one of my bulls on his F-1s sold out almost everything in 2011.
This is another one I bought off him when I was hauling never took her off the trailer


 
I would either have to make them or ask around through a broker. I have never used that Texas cattle broker Clay Nohavitza but I bet he could find some. He does not live too far from me. He is all over you tube and facebook.
 
I am also a member of the independent cattlemens association. Might network through them it I go that route.

Very valid point especially in the terminal operation.
You have to stay on top of what your "neighbor" runs and where your replacements come from.
One of the very reasons I love the barn, I know who has what I want and don't want.
On top of that I pay true market value, too many today have fallen into the paper trap thinking paper
equates to quality and profit.

CB I would not have let her off my trailer either till I got home. Wouldn't even let anybody look in there at her. Has she been a good producer? temperament?
