New guy on the block. I've seen references on this board to heifers and cows being open or closed. What do these two terms mean?

Thanks

I don't think I've heard the term "closed" used in that fashion. Usually cows are referred to as "bred" or "settled", meaning they are pregnant. "Open" refers to a cow that is not pregnant.

If someone is talking about a closed herd it would mean that they don't bring in any outside animals and just raise replacements from that herd .
