If I am buying some feeder steers at 500 lbs and they are currently at 108.21 cwt should I expect the seller to sell them lower than the auction price since I am transporting them and he is saving this cost plus auction commission.
There's two ways of looking at this. He probably figures he is saving you from having to wade through the traffic going to a salebarn. He is saving you time that you would have to spend sitting through the auction. You are getting cattle with a known history. He probably figures he is doing you a favor as is. Either way, you'd be dragging a trailer to the sale barn or else to his place.
The price you are paying seems to be a little below the current market prices here locally for Number 1 steers. What exactly are you buying?
If you are getting good steers, and willing to pay the asking price, I'd leave it at that personally. Otherwise you may be compromising "next time." Do you think you'll be doing something similar to this in the future? He will likely talk to others in the business and he's probably been in it for a while.
