with so many good cows being sold now because of the drought where do you all think cow prices will be in the spring?

High. For the next few years barring continued drought. If I could find the hay for a decent price I would expand now. It looks like i'll either be paying a high price come spring or holding off for a few years. The latter ain't very likely.

should be high, the problem is how high. there are alot of variables to consider, not the least of which is feed. transportation will also be a factor along with other things that can't be predicted, ie: the weather. also with the recent downgrade in the federal credit rating, the value of the dollar will be further diminished, making the cost of credit higher. doing business will become more difficult. other than that, it looks good.....

Will be high if there is moisture to raise the feed. Credit rating has nothing to do with eating.

credit rating and dollar value have alot to do with buying..........

I priced some fertilizer today, and then decided to buy hay instead. We have cheap hay here but I think there will be a lot of plowing once we get a dry fall.

Fall prices for feeders here have been a buck a pound forever. That's if you get them off the farm. 2-4 weights were going for 75 -85 cents a lb. 2 nights ago at the local salebarn. They were more crummy looking than normal though. I don't expect prices to change here much in the spring. Maybe 10 -15 cents higher when pasture starts to show.

Well, me and my big mouth.... :lol2: I stopped by one of my suppliers farm and he tells me that his calves are $1.25 a lb this year and that he's almost sold out already. Last year he had calves for sale well into December. I have noticed a huge amount of people fencing in a few acres and raising their own beef around here.

Not really unless you're buying dollars.

If today was any indication of things to come......
300's went for over $2.00/lb today in Colorado
400's for $1.50-$1.70
800-900's for $1.30 (.20 higher than the average 3-4 months ago)

Old bred cows in good condition went for $1000
with a very LIMITED supply of bred cows and pairs. A short bred heifers went in the $900 range.

As always, black and black baldies brought premium prices. Charolais and reds average prices. Longhorns or cross breds bring 1/3 of the price of traditional breeds.
