Went to the salebarn saturaday prices were unreal. Wished I had several trailer loads to sell.
Heavies were bringing more for cutters than people were willing to bid. Buyers were buying everything that came through. Cows that would have been lucky to fetch 300 bucks were bringing 800 bucks or better.
That said the barn was 2/3 capacity at best there are just no more cattle to be sold. Quite a few I know have sold out with these prices and don't plan on getting back in. This could make an interesting few years.

CB its going tobe a fun ride for a good meny years to come.because as you said people are selling out an quiting with the high prices.an i dont think herd expansion will ever catch up with the beef demand again.because as you know alot of dairies have sold out as well.the feedlots will take 2 or 3yrs to get back to running like they was.

I dumped every market calf I owned yesterday. Steers were off slightly from the prices I got a week ago. Heifers were even higher as were slaughter cows. I was not at the sale but rather dumped them there on Sunday.

I've got 9 heavy heifers that will calve out soon. They are looking more and more like nickels in the bank instead of my original plans.

I am hauling my neighbors 14 year old 2400 pound Hereford Sat. if he fetches the low end price of .75 a pound thats 1800 bucks. Now something doesn't seem right here as I sold him the bull for 1200 and he used him for 13 years.

From agcenter.com
Packer margins are improving. They are able to purchase cash cattle lower and raise box prices at the same time. Packers purchased additional cattle for $105 in Texas and $104 in Kansas. Some limited movement has pulled Kansas cattle into Texas plants. Packers can be expected to raise the slaughter rates this week.

Cattle on feed reported 5% more than last year with placements up 16%. This is the sixth month of higher placements. Feedlots marketed 5% more cattle than 2009 however, 2010 is the start of marketing numbers that are expected to be under 2009.

Boxed beef prices were steady. Choice cuts were quoted at $173 while select was quoted at $171. The choice/select spread was quoted at $2. Seasonally the choice select spread narrows this time of year.

Feeder cattle continued to weaken. Cash prices in Oklahoma City lost $5 or most of the large gains from last Monday. The interruption was the first in weeks as feeder prices have been on a rampage. Many feedlots are putting the buy on hold as reevaluating the risk proposition. Current prices for 750# steers on the southern plains are $123.

I can see a bunch of long term old timers cashing out and retiring. I would, beats and ROI out there right now

I have heard story's of the feed lots being empty and the numbers way down but how can it be if this is true?

I have been in Neb, Ks, and SD 5 times this fall and winter. Believe me when I say the feedlots are not empty.

If the cow numbers are down so bad where are the feedlot numbers and the high placements coming from. %16 is a lot of calves.
What happens to the price if the next reports say that they were mistaken and the cow numbers are ok? Sure glad I already sold calves.

Where do you suppose all this beef is going to end up? Who are ' they" planning have this much beef go to as an end user?
What do you mean by " placements are up?" What is a " placement?" Placed in a feedlot?

Placements are UP from being DOWN- in feedlots
Compared to five years ago its still down.

The crunch is still to come- way too many heifers(what they are using to up placements in feedlots) and cows are being sold.

Added to that I am hearing here and everywhere else that there is trouble getting ca;ves on the ground alive this year.
Wonder if there were too many cost cutting measures and bad weather dragging the cows down?

Imagine that you compare placements this year to the highest year on record for placements just to prove you are right. 2006 had highest placements 1.88 for Jan 1 report 2011 second highest at 1.80

I have not been to NEB, KS, and SD to know. In TX, some are struggling at 60% capacity. Hearsay is that some have closed their doors to combine elsewhere. I have not seen that.

see what happens when feedlots are to tight to buy cattle they close.all they had todo was keep buying cattle.but oh no they would rather close than do that.
