Does the price of cattle really matter? We have no control over the prices we receive. And the way the market is fluctuating from week to week is killing us. IMO you'd have to be a fool to buy feeders - stockers when you have no idea what the price is doing.

I've had a very foolish week :D

You have a lot more faith in the market than I do Bigfoot. I've been trying to figure out how the futures work and can't. I know that supply and demand is supposed to drive the price of the commodity, but in cattle that's not been holding true. Bigfoot are you buying cows or calves?

The Feb has printed mountains of paper money to reduce interest rates and to increase demand in an effort to prop up financial markets. But existing consumer debt, declining real household income for many, low interest rates for an extended period, and reduced Chinese imports, have created a glut of commodities. Both the beef and the pork supply is up and price in down since last year. Grain is even worse off but La Nina is on the way.

Volatility is less transparent. I know traders are exaggerating both up and down future moves by trying to make $$$ on momentum. I think there are a lot of people who are willing to continue to produce beef at a loss. This can make the cash buyer and the producer unsure of what cattle are really worth. I consigned some calves to a "hot market" early this month and was told 3 days later not to bring them because now the price was tanking... What will they be worth tomorrow?

Seems like all producers will need to improve our marketing game. Grain guys talk about this endlessly. Selling some for future delivery sounds good but futures are much less than cash prices. What do you do with that?

I think it would be good to run a what if cattle budget with an additional 20% price decline.
