Hello all.

This calving season we have had 2 premature calves out of 3 year olds. One was a second timer, looking back I think her first calf may have been a bit premature. The other aborted her first one early last year, but we kept to try again.

Both calves were around 30-40#. One is alive, but so far a dummy calf. The other was DOA with a bit of a malformed / undeveloped lower jaw.

I normally give 2 rounds of Vira Shield 6 + VL5 HB at weaning, but I had difficulty with this bunch. I do not think they ever received that vaccine. I am not great about annual boosters either.

Am I right in assuming this was not a coincidence and quite possible a vaccination issue? I know without substantial proof it is just conjecture, but I would like to hear the forum's experience / knowledge.

The rest of the herd is vaccinated and so far so good on calving. I have 7 live calves out of my non 3 years old (vaccinated) and likely 2 dead calves out of 3 year old group (non-vaccinated).

These two that have calved the premature calves will be culled and my remaining 3 year olds (all of 2 head) will be vaccinated at the earliest convenience to eliminate that variable.

"...malformed / undeveloped lower jaw."

INCOMING! 🌠

Would think @Travlr would be closer to being correct than being unvaccinated. With prices as high as they are no reason not to cull hard. Used to think "oh I'll give them another chance" but it's not worth it to have problems multiple years in a row from the same animals. Cull hard, do not inbreed, and have quality feed available wether it be hay or pasture.
