Preg check result question

Vet preg checked our herd today and this one cow who I thought would have been 47 days pregnant appears to be open. Vet used ultrasound and said there was a lot of cloudy fluid like she was 2 months pregnant but just fluid...didn't see a fetus. Just wondering the odds of this being inaccurate. Bull left 22 days ago so I at least know she couldn't be really short bred.

I'm missing something. How do you know someone isn't short bred? If the bull was there 22 days ago, is it not possible the bull bred a female on the last day before he left? I probably would have waited to preg check until the bull had been gone at least 30 days.

Back to your question. The vet is probably correct, but if you would like to double check then try a urine test. @Tomcolvin recently preg checked using a urine test. Tom what do you think of the urine tests?

We had a heifer that didn’t show signs of being anywhere near calving so figured her to be open. Took her to the local vet office a few months ago, and just so happened a young vet was there and they weren’t busy so he used ultrasound on her. He said he saw something he called sugar biscuits that would imply she was likely very short bred maybe a month. Had our usual vet come out last week to preg check the spring calving cows and we had her rechecked because he said he wasn’t exactly sure she was bred at the time but thought she probably was. Turns out she was bred like he thought.

To me, anything less than 30 days is possibly short bred... if the bull left 22 days ago, I totally agree that she could have gotten bred that day or the day before. The cloudy fluid could be a good indication. I would do as suggested, do a urine test... It is not going to make that big a difference if you keep her another couple weeks. I am assuming that you only have 1 calving group so if she does not calve in that time frame she is going to be sold or eaten?
Especially if the bull left 22 days ago.... and you thought she was 47 days... she could well have come back in heat and rebred in the 21-25 day range after the first breeding.
Our vet is good with the ultrasound but he will say that anything under 30 days is really questionable... We have a couple pastures where it is not possible to pull the bulls after 90 days so they are always there right up to preg check time... when we bring the whole group home for the winter... I prefer that the bull be out 45 days before checking because it is less likely to cause them to lose one at that stage... and our vet is gentle... but they are better embedded and less likely to slip.

I don’t like the fact that the fluid is cloudy, likely means she is resorbing the fetus or has an infection. If she is resorbing the urine/ blood test may give you a false positive
Recheck her in a few weeks with ultrasound for the best answer. I’m guessing if she’s open she would be too far out of your calving window too keep even if you gave her a shot of lute today and rebred her so waiting doesn’t matter.
