On Friday the 10 year old gelding Ben's Cat won the Jim McKay Turf Sprint for the 5th time in the last 6 years.
Proving old horses can still be winners. Then on Saturday........
In the 1st race on Preakness Day 9 yr old HomeBoyKris a 9-1 underdog came from behind to win by a 1/2 length.
BUT after taking photos in the winner's circle, as a groom led him about 100 yards away back towards the barn
the horse became wobbly, fell over and was pretty much dead by the time he hit the ground.
An autopsy will be done, but the groom said his guess was heart failure or maybe a ruptured aorta.
Raising the question....At what age should a trainer retire a race horse, even if he can still win?
In the 4th race Pramedya a 4 yr old Filly suddenly broke down in the turn taking a violent spill breaking the jockey
Daniel Centeno's collarbone. She had broken the cannon bone in her left front leg and was euthanized on the track.
She was owned by Roy Jackson the owner of Barbaro who died 10 years ago after breaking his leg running in the Preakness.
Proving horse racing at any age is dangerous for the animals.
These stories make the news because they coincide with big races, at big tracks on big race days.
There are so many more that you never hear about happening at smaller tracks and or during training year round.
Is horse racing worth it?
Nyquist the Kentucky Derby winner and 3-5 favorite finished 3rd in the Preakness on the sloppy but firm track.
Ending any chance of a triple crown, a big drop in horse racing interest is now expected, until the next Kentucky Derby.
