Poll: Breeding Strategery

For this exercise, assume that the two animals match up perfectly phenotypically. I am asking about the potential breeding solely on pedigree.

If yes, would you keep the calf or would you consider this a terminal cross due to the close relation of the parents?

Given your acceptance of them phenotypically, and based on their pedigree - although they are 'closely bred' - yes, I would not hesitate to mate the two together - and NOT consider them a Terminal mating. I grant you that the sire of the sire AND dam is the same bull, and that the two dam's are half siblings, the resulting calf would be 7/8 inbred - but lacking obvious genetic problems manifesting themselves as real faults or physical deformaties, if the resulting calf was a heifer you would have a breeder with pretty solid genetics for future matings (to bulls which are NOT related to her within four generations!) If the resulting calf would be a bull, I would not keep him as a breeder because of the higher possibility of his mating with females with similar genetics, which could cause some real physical problems down the line!

This is an interesting exercise in possibilities, but I would not want to make a habit of it.

I wouldn't hesitate to breed halfsibs if they are both outstanding animals without known flaws.

I am just not sure there is much to gain by concentrating the genetics on both sides of the pedigree in one mating?
