I dont have a tractor this year. Is the any thing I can grow such as ouays or grass by broadcasting seed with out tilling. At this point I only have an atv but cant find attachments for it.

I've started grass seed many times without tillage. This method never fails. First, broadcast the seed using a cheap hand cranked seed slinger. Next, rent yourself a lawn aerator- it looks like a drum with spikes welded to it. You can buy a lawn aerator but they're not cheap. Fill aerator with water and pull over seeded area with atv. You might want to go over entire area more than once. Drain water from aerator and return to rental place.

The question is planting with no tractor, but let's say he did rent a tractor. What would he do with it?

exactly - GP advise is excellent and economical. It also does not disturb the soil as much and make ruts in your field.

I understood what the question was. However, Not everyone knows a tractor could be rented and was offering a suggestion. It may be common knowledge to some you can rent them others not. Yes, I agree what GP said is a good solution thats how I fix my problematic spots. The OP said no tractor this year so that to me tells me other years they had one so disturbing the soil and making ruts was not an issue.

I also live in Lockhart area, with our weather and soil, a prepared seed bed is required to plant summer forage. In the fall rye grass can be over seeded , mix it with fertilizer to overseed, Ryegrass, oats, and wheat are a cool season plant in Central Tx. It will go dormant in April or May. Wheat or oats require a prepared seed bed. :cboy:

Pretty dead on advice, ryegrass will stick but thats in the fall.one summer perennial that requires very little tillage is bdahl bluestem. Does Well in your area and is great feed. I would still rough things up a bit first.light disc would be best, could drag or roll areate. Seed laying on top of the ground is in grave danger of getting stranded while sprouting in,texas heat. Sky gave good advice. You should be able to rent tractor in your area

There are single axle wheeled electric seeders, that was made to be pulled behind an atv--use a 12v battery to broadcast the seed and has a little trail-behind disk and roller, but I don't know if they would help at all---looked like something you would plant or fertilize a lawn with. They sold them at the Kubota dealership I worked at. Don't remember how much they were, but you could probably rent a tractor for what the gizmo cost. I think they were branded Plotmaster.
Here's one version:

My dad once planted rye grass in his hay pastures by purchasing a broiler barn of chicken litter and spreading rye grass seed (IIRC) in the broiler barn while the litter was still there. So the cleanout and spreading of the litter on the field did the trick.
