I am looking at a 40 acre tract of newly cleared land in North Florida and was trying to figure out what the best type of Bermuda grass to plant for a hay crop would be.

I can get green cuttings of Coastal to spread out also(if that is a reasonable way to plant it).

I guess the main question I have is what is the best way to plant it? sprigs? green cuttings? seed?

Thanks in advance,
Ben

What I would do if I was in your shoes is talk to some custom hay balers in your area and ask them what grows the best hay in your area and specifically on the type of site your hayfield is on. They should be glad to share their experience and suggestions with you. Could be Alicia, Tift 85, Coastal, or something else. Sprigging or green cuttings will be the way to go. Seeded bermuda won't make the volume of the seedless hybrids. :D

We have Alicia and are pleased with it. It probably will not yield what Coastal will but is a little more forgiving if you can't cut it every 30-35 days.
