Got to love it when a plan comes together even if it wasn't the original plan. So on Tuesday tagging calves spotted a calf who wasn't right. After some careful head scratching wondered if the cow wasn't giving enough milk. That happens to one or two of these old cows every year. I had 3 which had lost their calves much earlier. So the plan was to sort off the three cows to take them to the sale. And sort off this questionable cow and her calf. While doing this I found a cow with a 2 day old calf that was dead. Calf looked perfectly healthy except it was dead. Came to the conclusion that the cow must have laid on it. Ran the questionable cow into the chute. She had two quarters with no milk and the other two had right next to nothing. So she joined the 3 for a trip to town. Fetched the dead calf, skinned it, and hung the hide on the no milk calf. Added the cow who had the dead calf. Cow went to talking to the calf. Calf went to sucking on the cow. Been 2 days now. They are a happy family. I will leave them in the corral for about a week to make sure they love each other and then back out to general population
