pinkeye?

When i went to feed the calves tonight , I noticed one with a little whitish mucus discharge coming from the corner of his eye, he has one heck of an appetite, no loss of energy it doesnt seem to bother him should I be of concern, I have never had pinkeye, one person said treat him and the others for pinkeye and one said it was probably some bedding that might have got in his eye, any suggestions???? :?:

Keep an eye on him. Dust, pollen, chaf, any number of things can cause schmouts to be secreted from the eye. If they eye isn;lt watering excesivvly or show sensitivity to light it's probably not pinkeye. Don;t be too fast on the trigger with antibiotics.

With Pink eye, the calf will develop an ulcer on eye ball. Look for that and cloudiness on eye ball itself, along with, as the previous writer says, excessive weeping of the eye due to the pain and sensitivity to light.

Generally speaking, ulcerated eyeballs, cloudiness, and the blue spot on the eyeball only happen if the pinkeye goes untreated.

Alot of dust up here so we get some runny eyes. I'd take a close look at the eye...you can see why it's called pink eye.
We've used over the counter eye wash to flush problem eyes that were normal in colour with good results.
Do you have a fly problem?

just wanted to update whatever it was went away, I read up on all the symptoms of pinkeye and he had none so i didnt just to the antibiotics, and the next day it was gone,

If you do end up with pinkeye problem just try an oldfashioned trick, iodized salt tossed in the eye, twice a day 4-5 days. You just have to regain there trust but other than that not bad. We have used it many times. We had one last year we didn't catch until almost to late and had to call vet. He gave her antibiotics and sewed the eye shut and 10 days later stitches removed. She has a clouded eye bu tfine otherwise. Good luck in future, a pain in the butt desiese but can be cured.

Thanks for the tip, but I believe I'll pass. There are much better methods available to treat pinkeye.

I know this does work as I have and continue to do it. Like she said gotta catch it quick though. Actually it ain't as stressful as some of the other methods involving needles, stress, ropes, choice cuss words, and headgates.

I read a pretty good article somewhere on the salt trick and I can't seem to find it now. They can't seem to prove whether it draws the infection out or if it causes watering so much that it waters the infection down and out to the point it disappears. A neighbor still uses that trick.
