We brought 3 new cows home Saturday. Longhorn's (not purebred) bred to Piedmontese due to calve mid-May. The first off the trailer is my fave. We call her "Big Red"

We haven't named this one yet but she looks pretty good also. Relatively thick for a LH.

This one ain't the prettiest but is FOR SURE the friendliest. Her name is "Curly Top" I hope she is around for a while.

After getting off the trailer the three amigos high tailed it back into the woods but I found them.

After a few hours "Redbull" finally met the girls.

The hired help was busy playing in the hay.

Expensive hobby, I have not had a problem to date with the jersey steers I have had with horns or the longhorn bull. I will have to let you know about the three LH cows because I noticed today the one was swinging at some of the hornless black heifers, but it is too soon to tell yet. I always make sure when I feed hay to spread it out enough that there is no need for competition. Actually the LH bull is probably the friendliest animal I've ever had. He knows exactly where the tips of his horns are and has never shown the slightest sign of aggression towards anything. A few times he was sniffing around on some heifers and when I got close he looked me square in the eyes and snorted I got his point and backed off. Other than those times he will walk right up to me and put his head down and loves to have his head scratched. Especially behind his horns and above his ears.

Just curious. I have one horned heifer that I picked up along the way. She seems to be bossy with some of my other hornless girls. Nice pics though. Did you get any of that snow last night?

Just a dusting. This winter so far has been very mild for us. If we make it into January like this I will be thrilled.

Nice pics. I've always thought Longhorns were a real interesting breed of cattle. Looks like Big Red's horns filled up the trailer pretty good. Hopefully they will work out well and raise you some nice calves.

I know what you're saying RBB. Can I just hack them off with a hack-saw, just the tips ? I tried with a jersey I had several years ago but when I started cutting about halfway down the horn (they were maybe 6" long) it started bleeding and I chickened out and let him keep them. I plan on leaving them intact but will nub them if they start using them aggressively.

i'll b surprised if they dont start cutting and scratching up your other cattle.i had 2 hroned cows and they kept cuttin my others up until one day they got a baby pretty good and i said thats enough of this crap and i put them n the shoot.well all i ahd with me was my battery powered dewalt sawzall, but it worked great.i took them off all the way so they was flush with the skull.hardly any blood loss.

Those are good looking long horns Steve. I'd like to have a big steer for the frOnt pasture . So I can have him mounted when he gets old . You might have to fill the tip of the horn after you cut them .

Thanks JS. They are all very mild mannered. I wouldn't have taken any of the horned animals otherwise. I've already had a couple offers on the bulls head when his time comes. The one gentleman has a hunting cabin in Montana with a big wall he thought he would be perfect for a cape mount. He is an impressive dude when he walks up to you. I won't hesitate to nub them though if they get mean with the horns. Not the bull though. I don't have the facilities for that. I think I'd have to drop him.

By the way JS. I haven't forgotten about our bet on the game Jan. 2nd. The Buckeyes will be victorious!
I'm ready . About to watch the beef o Brady bowl now. Looks like osu should have passed on this bowl game. Now that the NCAA has banned them for next year .

Blood is going to fly, before I got smart enough to dehorn at conception. Horn's are nothing but a problem looking for a spot to happen. I have cut horn's off with about anything that would cut including a chainsaw. Hit the end of the horn with a hot iron. Of all the job's dealing with a cow I hated dehorning the most.
