Here is an updated picture. Her sire is Remitall Keynote 20X, Dam is Klondike susie 732Y. The calf is sired by cs boomer 29f and was born 3-9-05. This is her first calf. What do you all think? I am not a memeber of the AHA and don't think I will register the calf.

Thanks, though I can't take all the credit. I bought her as a bred heifer last fall. Never had registered stock before. Lots to learn, and this board is so helpful. Trying to learn how to tell a good cow from a bad before I venture into registering anything. I have her bred back to Feltons Ozzie, hope that calf turns out as well as this one.

that boomer bull is a great bull the first hereford we everybred(this year) was by him becasue the AI people gave us the wrong bull it turns out to be the nicest heifer from this year

thats a real mice pair.she has done a great job raising that bull calf.she shows to have alot of milk in her.scott

Her milk EPD is +27, M&G 50. She was an ET calf, here is a picture of her sister who aborted twins this past spring in her seventh month of gestation. She is bred back to Feltons Legend 242. Hopefully she has a live calf next spring. Big difference in build from her sister. This one has a slight hump back.

I would like to have the bull calf in above picture breed this heifer next spring. Her EPD's are BW 7.3, CE -10.1. I have her bred to a Red Angus bull Basin 79E (per Dunns suggestion) now.

I am not a member of AHA, so there would be a $115 to join and be able to register one, and I'm pretty sure that the certificate for cs boomer 29f is $100. All that $ and he is the only one I have right now to register. If I knew I could get good money out of him later I would think about it. I really wasn't sure if he was that good looking. We bought the registered bred heifers just because I wanted quality commercial breeding stock, not to get into the registered business, and I wouldn't want to register just any old thing. I wanted to AI them to a Black Angus and get some nice baldies, but I liked the red so much that we stay with hereford bulls again this year. Thanks for the compliments. With all the pictures posted on this board, hopefully I will be able to judge cattle a little better.

If you want to optimize your return on your investment, unless it is too late, I would cut that bull calf and sell him as a club steer. Seriously, good hereford steers are very hard to find and people pay top dollar for them. You could easily get 3k for that steer as soon as you weaned him off the cow. You would get more money for him than if you would feed him out to be a bull. Even if you took him to a sale, nobody knows you, and you would take a hit on the sale price. Most people will pay more money for a lessor quality bull from a respected breeder than they will from someone with one bull. It isn't fair but that is the way it is.

Depending on how thick he is behind, they want them real thick these days. Show steer business is funny. We have bought some good steers for our son because we won't cut our good bulls. He won Grand Champion at a pretty big fair with a calf and the first thing everyone wanted to know how he was bred? Huh? He is a steer, he is going to die in four days! I had to call the jock we bought him from to find out because so many people were bugging me!LOL

3K  !!!! Not that I doubt you ,but I would never be that lucky! I don't know how popular the club scene is around central wisconsin. I think the Wisconsin hereford breeders are holding a calf sale sometime this fall, but there again I would have to be a member to consign an animal and with my luck he would bring the lowest price. ;-) If anyone wants to pay me 3k for him let me know, I will have the vet out tomorrow to cut him ;-) ! Of course you would have to pick him up as we don't own a trailer.

Check out showsteers.com, I am not kidding. We paid $3500 for a hereford steer at Denver two years ago that wasn't half the steer yours is. The one we wanted went for $6500! Last year at our state fair, the four steers in the final drive were all 10-20k steers. That was from a jock that knows. 3k is middle of the road for steers to compete on the open jackpot level. That isn't winning it either, just competitive. I can't believe the money people pay for steers that have a very short shelf life. We buy one steer and he makes what he makes, lots of kids have second and third strings!

Funny part is, most of the "big dogs" come from the MidWest and then you hear the MidWesterners talking about the "big dogs" they bought on the West Coast! Our son has had eight steers and only one of them has come from our state. I don't even waste time trying to hunt one down. We spend enough time trying to find herd bulls. I have a really good show jock that I put an order in to and go pick up the steer. He knows we can feed them out so he gets us good ones.
