Well some of you know I had to get rid of a filly as she had a health problem. I found this boy and brought him home. He seems to have his head screwed on pretty good. Not like my Idiot. He has what I call a head space issue. That is, his head gets in my space to often. Does a little lipping that I have already started resolving. Stands just a bit over 15 hands.

Some of his kin are Blondy's Dude, Quinarius Chance, Leo, Three Bars and Magnolia Bar.

I haven't been here for a while Flaboy, very nice looking horse, well balanced nice head and a soft eye. Most of my horses have the Three Bars influnece and if you go back far enough you'll find Leo also. The Three Bars is pretty close and I really like the influnce, assuming it's Three Bars influnce.

How old is he? and is he ready to ride?

He just turned 3YO. He was green broke some time ago and nobody has messed with him in months. The girl that had him had a baby and the horse got ignored. I will give him 4 day to settle then start on some respect training. I plan to be on him in no more than 3 weeks from now.

Chrisy, not sure which one needs to spook out. Skip was bomb proof when I first looked at him. He got jumpy when I brought him home. He will settle. Idiot has always been spooky but I REALLY like him. They rode in the trailer together for two hours or so. I put in turnouts side by side over night. They were then put in side by side pastures for half a day. Then I put them together. The 3YO is showing the youngster just who is really in charge.

question, just what are you doing to handle the head space problem?

MrGale, I use my hand mostly. He likes to turn his head if you are beside him say brushing or something. I will push it away. If standing at his head or near and he moves his head towards me I will push it away. When leading I use the elbow out at 90 degrees in his face and will use it on him if he ignores it. He is getting to where if I put out my open palm towards his face he stops moving. If he tries to lip me I smack the H out of him.

In the three days I have worked on this I can already see the difference. Much less head movement and much less lipping. Hope that helps.
 
it sure does....that is exactly how i have been doing it....i just do not want to make her hand shy....she is staying about two feet off of me now, and that is good, but she does not want me putting my hands near her front of head....still takes a halter well though....bridle and bit next....she is a big honkin donkey. thanks for the tips.....by the was, i call the 90 degree elbow a "Jack elbow"....you need it on a jack more often than not.... :)

I agree you don't want to make them head shy. This guy doesn't move his feet when reprimanded, just his head. I try to not touch him on the face, just the cheek or nose depending on what his doing.

I think horses are much like cows. They really feel intimidated by hands to the face. I know I wouldn't like my face to be rubbed all the time. I try to rub/pet the jaws, neck, and sometimes the end of the nose only. My Idiot was really head shy but he is getting over it. I rubbed (and still do) him on top of the head, jaws, and nose whenever I could get my hands on him. He NO where near as bad as he was about being head shy.

Whatever I do I try to be consistent as best I can.
 
an old timer told me that you do not want a donk that you can not mess with the top of the head and ears....the ears are real sensitive, and my guess was he waws talking about getting a bridle on it....

Welllllll---I,ll never tell :lol: But this time it was the horse,he got me on the arm,I bit a chunk out of the soft part of the nose,just above the nostral.. Then he was gelded...Your guess is as good as mine as to which worked best :lol: :lol:
 
I was talking a lady the other day that had been bit badly on the thigh by her friends horse. I asked her if she smacked the you know what out of it and she said "no, it wasn't my horse".

I don't care if it is mine or someone elses horse. If that dang thing bites me I gonna punch it in the nose if I can. My neighbor even commented that his gelding isn't bitting as much. I told him your dang right, the last time I was fixing fence he tried to bite me and I hit him in the nose with my hammer handle. He just laughed and said I guess that explains it.
