those things are about extinct up here in Michigan. We used to have them running around like chickens in the 70's. We had several hard winters and changing agriculture practices that pretty much wiped them out. The state tried introducing those Sichuan pheasents from China which are supposed to be more hardy and less dependent on waste grain to get them through the winter but they never took off.

hm. down here all we have is the ringneck pheasant... they are pretty cool looking... we've got some stuffed ones around here somewhere.

For many years, about a dozen of my buddies and I would go to west Kansas, out around Plains and pheasant hunt for 4 days. Every year, we would get our 16 bird limit, each, to take home. We would walk the stalk fields and the tumbleweed dry lands and bust the nooning junk piles that were head high tumbleweeds. The best hunting was when it was about 20 degrees and 40 mile per hour winds out of the north. The pheasants would bunch up out of the wind and you could walk up on them. Those were some great hunts.

wow! thanx! i don't know, but they are some pretty birds... i haven't gotten to go hunting yet, but o well.(completely different topic) we are going to try to go coyote hunting one of thease days..

smart_slider,

What part of Kansas are you in ? I went Pheasent hunting in Kansas in Beloit (North Central Kansas) and did not find that many Pheasents. But most of the land in that area was leased or private land that you was not allowed to hunt on. There were probably alot of Pheasents there though. But the public WIHA was not very good at all.

well... we are kind of south so that may be a factor... but they are EVERYWHERE!! on a completely different note, there was a mangy coyot out here that was eating our chickens... poor sucker was an old coyot... finally shot him after our stud dog was growling and barking at him... sorry for rambling,

We use to have them clean up under the bird feeders that Susie puts out but haven't so much as heard a rooster squawk lately. With the development uopon the hill and the coyotes I fear that we've seen our last pheasant. Have about an acre that we haven't done anything with just so that the birds have a wild place to nest...quail use it and last year the roosters hung out in the thickets...hope to see them again in spring.
On the brighter side the pullets should arrive on the 14th so it's time to start building coyote traps...could even order some pheasants after the yotes are under control.
