Lifetime ban for betting on the Reds while he was coaching them. He bet on them to win. SHould he be reinstated?
Thoughts

Did the law or rules make a distinction regarding which way one bets--win vs lose?
(It's been so long since it happened I forgot the details)

I think he should, baseball has gone way to corrupt, steroids, ect. He did a lot for baseball and just happened to get hung too early.

I saw him a couple of years ago in Vegas, he was in an art store just outside a casino at a table signing autographs. For me it was a sad sight. So many have done worse than him and are in.

If he bet against them I would say let him stay banned. The "black sox scandal" to throw the series comes to mind. But to bet on them to win you can bet he wasn;t planning on throwing games.

If he would have admitted it up front they probably wouldn;t have such a hard on for him.

I'm a baseball fan, but in my opinion the hall of fame will be a joke as long as he's not in it. You can beat your girlfriend on video and still play football, but you're banned from baseball for betting on your own team to win? Why can one be forgiven and not the other?

Absoutely he should be in the Hall of Fame. Look at all the records that have fallen to steriod using scumbags and they still persecute Pete.

What a joke!

Even if he bet on them to win, you still gotta keep the point spread in mind. Fortunes to be made by unscrupulous people, if the Reds won, but didn't beat the spread.

Spread is pretty hard to fix in baseball unless the pitcher is in on the fix

Me and you both I lived to play baseball.

Pete was one of the greatest to ever play the game.
What got Pete in trouble was the time period when he committed the infraction.
Our morals have slipped so far since then he looks like a saint compared to todays corruption in
professional sports.

I'm biased. My buddies and I attended many a Reds game in the 70's. The '76 team stands beside the 1927 Yankees as the "Best ever", in my mind. Rose was the heart of those teams. I generally don't like the "others have done worse" arguement in any context, but Pete and his 4,256 hits belong. Absolutely.

Pete Rose new the rules going in. If you can't do the time, don't commit the crime. It's really sad because he's one of the best ever.

I never liked Pete Rose. REally never liked the Red's period being a long time Brooklyn then LA Dodger fan. Johnny Bench was a heck of a ball player....can't say much about his Blue Emu commercials though.

I believe it was his denial and cocky attitude that got the original ban. He was arrogant before it was the norm for athletes.
His stats will always be there and we will always have these discussions. Even if he was allowed in there would still be the asterisk by his name in the minds of many.
Looking back on past presidents I believe Nixon should be in the Hall of Fame. Many have abused much more power than he ever imagined. Yet we still see him as a cheat. Same shoe, different foot.

What Pete did as a player should get him in. What he did as a manager is what's keeping him out. There in lies the difference in your analogy.

What Nixon did as a player is what got him in the White House. What he did as the manager of the White House is what we remember him by.

I was a Dodgers fan until they moved to LA. Hated them after that. But I still can;t root for the yankees

My thoughts as well
I think Pete was held to a higher standard than players have been for the last few years
