Six weeks ago I put out $105/acre worth of fertilizer on some alicia and Tift 85. The day after I put it out I got 2 inches of rain then from that point on we got fairly frequent rainfall. My plans were to cut the hay in 30 days but weather threatened rain so I waited. Last week we got over six inches in one downpour and the grass was really needing to be cut. Monday I laid one 15 acre field of T85 on the ground and Tuesday I laid 25 acres of alicia the ground then fluffed the 15 acre field. Wednesday I baled 100 rolls of some really pretty Alicia (4 rolls/acre) and refluffed the T85. Thursday I baled 129 bales of T85 (8.6/rolls/acre) in the 15 acres I cut on Monday which btw also has had seven replacement heifers on it since spring. Granted I had to fluff it twice in spite of using a conditioner mower and I could have baled it sooner had I not had a few equipment problems but the weather was on my side. Anyhow, I thought it was interesting to see the difference in the yields between the two grasses. I do like the Alicia in its ease of baling but when I look at the return on my dollar in fertilizer I do love T85. But then again, if this was a wet year I'd probably be singing Alicia's praises and cussing 85.
Oh, the rest I have to cut and bale will be T85 that has been grazed only once for a short period so I hope the weather cooperates.
